Iona Lane & Ranjana Gathak

Having first collaborated under big skies and autumnal birdsong at Cove Park during Making Tracks 2022, Iona Lane and Ranjana Ghatak are brought together through their love of singing: combining music from their respective backgrounds to create a beautiful mix of ethereal sonic goodness.

“The very first time we sat down together to collaborate was quite daunting actually. I think we didn’t quite know what would happen,” explains Iona. “But almost immediately I think we both knew it would be something special!”

Known primarily for her songwriting, Iona Lane’s music is driven by wonder at the natural world, delivering poetic songs, with subtle musical touches and contemplative melodies. Having released her debut album ‘Hallival’ in 2022 of entirely self-penned material, this project sees another side to Iona, one that branches out into music from the British folk tradition and beyond. Having previously studied under the watchful eye of Nancy Kerr, Iona finds herself back in the realms of repertoire that she explored during her studies with the intent of collaboration at the heart.

Ranjana Ghatak started her learning in the classical and devotional Hindustani vocal traditions in her hometown of London, before continuing her study under the guidance of Maestro Pandit Ajoy Chakabarty from 2000. Ranjana has explored traditional music, in addition to juxtaposing the beauty of sacred vocal music with contemporary instrumentation over the last 14 years. Through this exciting collaboration we hear Ranjana performing in a new way: stark and poised, collaborating solely with vocals.
